What is a doula?
The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek word meaning "a woman who serves". Today, birth doula is a professional who provides support to the mother and her partner before, during and just after birth. Studies have shown that when a doula attends a birth, the labor is shorter with fewer complications, the baby is healthier and breastfeeds more easily.

Doula does professionally what grandmothers did for mothers-to-be in the past, and much more. We stay at the side of a woman in labor during the entire time, help her to bear her pain more easily; we help her to make the labor shorter and easier for the mother and the baby. We help the mother to ask the right questions of her doctor, to make sure the intervention the doctor is offering is really necessary. If her partner is at the woman’s side, we show him or her how to help the woman at the partner’s comfort level. The doula makes every effort to see to it that everything is done according to the woman’s desires. When the baby is born, the doula helps to put the baby to the breast. Doulas use their own experience, the wisdom they received from their mothers and grandmothers, and their knowledge of the physiology of birth and the psychology of women in labor.
